Greg Heffley

Gregory (Greg) Heffley is the main character of Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, who is believed to be loosely based on Jeff Kinney. He is smaller then 95% of the kids at his school so he is a good target for bullies. He is an outcast who has, according to him, "unreliable" friends. He is very concerned about his popularity level and how he looks in public. This shows that he's shallow and his worries are based on what other people think. He's also very critical of other people, thinking that everything he does is perfect and correct, and usually justifies his actions with poor excuses. He absolutely loves video games and slacking off, taking after his older brother Rodrick Heffley. As much as he dislikes his older brother, he takes up a lot of traits from him (selfish, slacker, etc.) He also has an interest in cartooning and making comics. He is played by Zachary Gordon in the movie.

Personality

Greg Heffley is a boy who lives in a world where nothing really goes his way like being abused by his teenage brother, Rodrick. Greg is percieved as underweight, greedy, lazy, selfish, imperfect, immature, boastful, arrogant, rude, insecure, hypocritical, clumsy, egoistical, narcisstic, mischevious, ill-spirited, foul-mouthed and troublesome. He explains that he is good at nothing, other than video games, in which he spends most of his time on. At one stage he had an interest for publishing a comic for the school newspaper, but he soon quits, as Mr. Ira changed the comic completely, making everybody believe that Greg is the teacher's pet. He almost always takes advantage of Rowley, and uses him as a decoy for his own schemes and desires, and also attempts to raise money through his schemes for his own personal use. He also had a crush on Holly Hills, but his attempt failed as she called him Fregley. Greg often comes up with many plans to impress girls, make money and to be popular among his school, but mostly all of his schemes fail, and lead to serious, unfair and unwanted circumstances. Greg is also uncomfortable around Fregley, the most unpopular kid in his school. Many of his teachers hate him since they all had Rodrick as a student in middle school, and they expect Greg to be as bad as his brother is. This is evidence that Greg's teachers don't realize that just because Rodrick or anyone else was bad doesn't mean that Greg or anyone else's sibling will be the same. Rowley's parents see Greg as a bad influence. He is terrible at school, failing in most of subjects, and not making any effort in school whatsoever; he is also ignorant to the fact that his expectations, which are exceedingly high, come from a good education. Greg is often pushed by his parents to either participate in sports, or read books or newspapers more often, but he prefers to play video games instead. Greg is an abusive and narcissistic boy, who only admires himself as the best person in the world, and views every person he does not like as imperfect and immature. He is also hypocritical in the fact that he repeatedly criticizes people for their flaws; these flaws are also frequently done by Greg himself. By the third and fourth book, Greg is apparently giving up his video game addiction, and moving on to participate in sports more frequently and reading as well. Note that many children around his age can relate to his personality.

Interests

In the book, it is shown recurring that Greg's main interests are video games and comics, and spends most of his time on that. For a time, he harbored a hope of drawing for the school newspaper, but his comic was bowdlerized by the editor and Rowley’s comic was better liked by the people at his school.

In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, Greg tried to make a comic called "Hey, People!" which emphasizes Greg's critical manner. The comic was going to be "half advice, half comic." However, Sweetie distracted him by drooling on his pillow, so the comic was never published.

Dislikes

Greg apparently dislikes a lot of things. This is a shockingly long list of what Greg detests; this proves that Greg is very picky and fussy and cannot maturely handle the things he does not like.

  • Homework - Greg finds it to be a waste of time and an obstacle to video games and TV. He does his homework, but he does it with no enthusiasm, ergo, doing it poorly.
  • School - Greg is bullied constantly, has few friends, gets bad grades, his teachers dislike him, yet ironically show no dislike to anyone in Greg's class.
  • Having no privacy - Greg thinks privacy is important and gets worried when somebody interferes with it.
  • Soccer - Greg is very bad at soccer, cannot do proper dribbling of the ball, is not used to playing soccer at night, and hates his coach.
  • Mr. Litch - Greg hates his coach - he is strict, authoritative and is the reason why Rodrick does not participate in sports anymore.
  • Rodrick - Even worse than the bullies at school, Rodrick abuses Greg by lying to him, causing huge amounts of physical harm to him, and using him as a decoy to get out of trouble.
  • Detention - Greg thinks that detention is for "future criminals" and believes that he is not one. He thinks the reason he got a detention was a bad reason.
  • Rip-offs - In The Last Straw, Greg sees ads in the back of a comic book and orders them, but they are rip-offs.
  • Rodrick's band, Loded Diper - Greg, much like his dad, thinks that Rodrick's band plays terribly. Greg is constantly distracted by Rodrick's band when he is trying to do homework or play video games.
  • Fregley - Greg thinks Fregley is a freak and totally disgusting - Fregley offers to tell Greg about his "hygiene issues" and his "secret freckle," amongst other disgusting and absurd things, much to Greg's dismay.
  • Rowley's stupidity - Rowley's stupidity has gotten them into trouble many times, especially in the fourth book, where he takes the "grand prize" of a huge box of chocolate-covered raisins instead of participating in the national tournament where he could get a million dollars. Also, he refuses to believe that Greg hit him with a rubber band and thinks that Greg has "electrical superpowers."
  • Rowley's dad - Mr. Jefferson is everything Greg hates the most out of any thing he hates in his life - he is disciplinary, strict, rude and short-tempered, although he ironically shows none of these personalities to his son whenever he does something wrong.
  • Cheese Touch - Greg thinks the Cheese Touch is a waste of time and stupid, and that people are overreacting to moldy cheese on the playground.
  • Lil' Cutie - Like his father, Greg thinks that Lil' Cutie is a terrible comic and likes to read it to see how bad it is.
  • Sweetie (the family dog) - Sweetie took away everything from Greg - television (he barks at the television until the commercial with "gophers" shows up,) sleep (Sweetie sleeps in the middle of his bed and could very well bite off Greg's hand if Greg dared to move him,) and respect (Frank loves the dog so much that he does not care about what he does to Greg.)
  • The back of Rodrick's van - The back of Rodrick's van is very dangerous and has lots of band equipment that could very well possibly smash Greg into the wall. Nonetheless, Rodrick forces his little brother to sit there, claiming that "chlorine will ruin his seat" even though his van is very old.
  • Manny - Manny is everything what Greg sees as unfair and constantly - He is given everything he wants, and has more rights than what Greg and Rodrick had when they were little children, and always gets out of trouble whenever he wants to, and always says 'Bubby', much to Greg's irritation.
  • His mother - Greg's thinks his mother is annoying, clueless, over-reactive and ignorant. She also constantly humiliates him and forces him to do things he does not want to do.
  • Uncle Charlie's Gifts - Greg is always disappointed in what his uncle brings for Christmas. His uncle always jumps to conclusions and buys whatever Greg tells him to buy; however, these objects are in no way related to what Greg wants and are only similar in name.
  • Sports - Greg thinks sports are a waste of time and Greg is terrible at them.
  • Reading - Greg thinks reading is a waste of time and an obstacle for video games and entertainment. He only reads comic books, and very rarely, chapter books, albeit ones filled with violence.
  • Uncle Joe - Uncle Joe is the biggest source of trouble Greg finds. His dog ruined Greg's birthday by eating his cake, and does all sorts of stuff to trouble Greg's family, even though Uncle Joe hasn't done anything in particular to harm Greg.
  • Watercress salad - Greg thinks watercress salad, a dish made by his grandpa, is completely disgusting.
  • Gutbusters - Gutbusters is a game owned by his Grandpa, and Greg thinks it is old-fashioned and irrelevant, since the jokes don't make any sense to Greg.
  • Rowley's Trips - Rowley's world-travels constantly bother Greg, since Rowley always imitates a culture within a place Rowley is visiting, much to Greg's dismay.
  • Bryce Anderson - Greg has always attempted to become even more popular than him, and is extremely jealous of him, as Greg constantly tries to make Bryce look bad in front of everyone, but always has failed in every single attempt.
  • Whirley Street Kids - Like Rowley, Greg finds the Whirley Street Kids as the worst people in Greg's neighborhood, always being rude and nasty to the two.
  • Half-Birthday Parties - Like his father, Greg finds the Half-Birthday parties a complete waste of time, and finds that people are just making fools of themselves just so that the Snellas can win a prize at a television show.
  • Mr. Warren - Greg finds Mr. Warren as subject of a complete waste of time, and that his father is just simply over-reacting to combat against his boss to show how good his family is against Mr. Warren's.
  • Friend Parties - As mentioned in Book 4, Greg thinks that hosting a birthday party with his friends are utterly useless, as he never gets any birthday gift he asks for, and thinks that they have a right to ruin his party by playing with his presents.
  • Rowley's plagiarism of Zoo-Wee Mama- Greg hates Rowley for plagiarizing his comic, Zoo-Wee Mama, since it was completely Greg's idea, and yet Rowley stubbornly claims Greg had nothing to do with the creation of the comic.
  • Easter - Like Rodrick, Greg finds Easter as a big source of boredom, since Greg cannot do anything to keep himself entertained.
  • Christmas - Greg finds Christmas virtually disappointing, since he never receives what he wants from his parents nor from his relatives.
  • His birthday - Just like Christmas, Greg never receives any presents he wants, and always ends up in a disastrous consequence.
  • Rowley's parties - Greg finds Rowley's parties completely irritating and childish, since he plays childish activities at his parties, and according to Greg, Greg would find it better if he was 7 years old.
  • Having a Sleepover With Rowley- Sleepovers at Rowley's house for Greg is the most disastrous thing he has ever entered in. Rowley almost always plays childish activities and invites only little kids (not including Greg) to his sleepovers. They also play pranks on Greg when he is trying to sleep.
  • Rowley's Interests - Greg finds Rowley's interests immature and suitable for little kids, and gets easily irritated by them.
  • Patty Farrel - Patty is the largest obstacle Greg finds; She had ruined Greg chances of cheating on a Geography Test, and will never let him use the toilet when she is the hall monitor.
  • Reading Is Fun Club - Greg thinks that the club is utterly pathethic and useless.
  • The Country Club - The country club has been the biggest source of hatred for Greg - He was kicked out for just placing reasonable criticism of the club.

Appearance

Greg is usually depicted with black shorts, or black pants and a white shirt. He is very skinny and does not seem to eat nor work out much. His father has tried to get him to work out and exercise, but he prefers playing video games.

Relationships

Rodrick Heffley

Greg doesn't seem to be fond of his older brother that much. Rodrick often bullies, hurts and humiliates Greg at certain points within the story. Rodrick all the time pushes Greg around, even at one stage attempted to abuse Greg by videotaping a performance of Greg singing at his school production. However, similarly to Greg, his attempts to embarrass his brother doesn't work all the time, but they do work at stages, where Rodrick spread the secret of Greg's summer vacation story. However, there at some stages where Rodrick gives useful advice to his brother, but this is rarely spoken of. Greg also picks up several habits from Rodrick, such as being selfish, a slacker and more hostile to other people. Rodrick is also responsible for the damage of Greg's relationship with his father, when he wrote in his father's planner "Sell Greg." Despite this, their relationship does have its ups and downs.

Manny Heffley

Greg isn't really fond of his younger brother either, and he explains this profoundly in his diary. Manny causes all sorts of trouble to Greg, such as drawing on his door, stuffing a cookie in Greg's game system and calling him "Bubby", in which Manny still cannot pronounce properly. Manny always complains about Greg behavior and actions, even if it is a good one. Manny has also interrupted in all of Greg's sleepovers, often upsetting Greg. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, Manny again upsets Greg by calling him "Ploopy", in response when Manny got mad when his blanket got thrown away, even though Greg had nothing to do with it. Manny is also sensitive, as seen when Greg attempts to throw the "Ploopy" joke back at Manny in church; Manny replies by driving the entire family out of church with his uncontrollable crying. Greg sees everything unfair for Manny. He was given more rights than Greg, such as bringing anything he wants to church. Greg also writes down that even though Manny drives him nuts, Rodrick has stopped him for raising money for his fund-raising, and asks Manny to do it instead, which Greg is grateful for.

Susan Heffley

Greg finds his mother completely annoying, clueless, ignorant and over-reactive as she is always trying to get him to read and constantly embarrasses him. Greg doesn't like his mother, since he just hates what his mother does to him most of the time, such as bringing him into other conflicts, such as inviting him to Rowley's log cabin, or performing with Scotty Douglas. He hates the fact that she ignores him and can't understand grown up kids, a trait Greg completely dislikes about his mother.

Frank Heffley

Greg currently has a poor relationship with his father. His father hates Greg's interest in video games and he is constantly bothered by Greg's smallest mistakes, and constantly tries to get him into active activities, such as playing sports, in order to look good in front of his boss, a fact he constantly reminds Greg about. By the third book, his relation with his father seems to be fluctuating, until the ending, where his relationship with his father has improved, since his father now believes that Greg's wimpy ways saved him from looking foolish. His father is also slowly moving Greg away from his video game addiction as well. In the fourth book, however, Greg's relationship with his father is seemingly breaking apart, when he is called to pick Greg up from Rowley's log cabin due to a conflict, then breaks down even more when Greg nearly arrests him by calling the police when he believed that his father wanted to sell him away, even though Frank actually wanted to take him to a baseball game, a proposal Susan was encouraging to keep a more close father-son bonding. However, the relationship somewhat improves to tearing out a comic of Lil' Cutie.

Rowley Jefferson

Rowley and Greg overall have a very complex relationship, despite being best buddies. Rowley apparently has some characteristics that typically embarrass Greg, such as his childish interests. He loves to talk to Greg about his trips, though Greg has not interest whatsoever in his trips. Greg has often treated Rowley badly, such as breaking his arm and toe, and taking advantage of him for his own selfish desires. Rowley apparently starts as a pushover for Greg, and a tool for Greg's schemes at the beginning of the series, but in Dog Days, it is becoming evident that Rowley is now starting to become immune to Greg's schemes, and is therefore is losing patience with Greg. He and Greg have a series of fights in the fourth book, and the ending of Dog Days suggests that Greg will no longer keep his friendship with him anymore. Greg may also share the secret of Rowley eating the cheese if Greg doesn't want to keep his friendship with him anymore.

Rowley's Parents

Greg, overall has an extremely poor relationship with Rowley's parents, as they see Greg as a bad influence. Greg seems to have a close relation with Rowley's mother, but not as good as Rowley's father. Greg doesn't like Rowley's father and mother, and he explains this perfectly. Rowley is consistently spoiled by his parents, and his parents often ruin whatever schemes Greg has in mind, as depicted in Dog Days, where they ruin Greg's keychain. Greg also hates the fact that Rowley's father kicked him out of the Country Club, even though Greg had some reasonable ways in complaining.

Vice Principal Roy

Although not carefully explained, it is assumed that there is a mixed relationship between Greg and his vice principal. His vice principal is deeply concerned for Greg's behavior and Greg has been to see him twice, and has always been pardoned for his silly mistakes. Greg can sometimes dislike his Vice Principal, since he often bulges in to ruin Greg's schemes, such as when Greg campaigned to be Treasurer and used an abusive poster to attack Marty Porter, his rival.

Fregley

Greg completely despises Fregley, much like the other kids at school dislike Fregley. Fregley always attempts to talk to Greg about strange, absurd and stupid topics, but Greg always ignores him by not paying any attention to him. In Dog Days, Greg's mother invites him over, but Greg immediately slammed the door in Fregley's face.

Patty Farrell

Although there is no truly existent relationship between Greg and Patty, it can be assumed that their relationship is tense, Due to the stupid mistakes that Greg has committed to harm Patty, such as throwing an apple at her head in Book 1 during a stage play.

Grandma

Greg and his grandmother have a mixed relationship and feelings for each other. His grandmother doesn't seem to prefer Greg that much, and can get very disappointed with him, as Greg often does bad gardening services for her front lawn. Greg, however, is very disappointed that his grandmother didn't seem to give much hospitality to him when he was a kid than she does to Manny.

Grandpa

Greg and his grandpa are on good terms with one another, and Grandpa appears to be the only relative to favor Greg the most. Despite the good terms, Greg isn't very well used to how his grandfather lives and gets quickly annoyed with it. For starters, he doesn't like his watercress salad dish, and cannot watch proper television with him, as his grandfather always puts the channel on the CCTV camera.

Uncle Joe

Although carefully not explained, Greg presumably hates his uncle, largely for what he does to Greg's family, by causing large amounts of pain and disgust. It was his fault that his dog ruined Greg's birthday.

Uncle Charlie

The terms between Greg and his Great-Uncle are very strong and good, though Greg hates some of his characteristics. Greg is always disappointed for what presents he gives for Christmas, always never giving Greg anything what he requests, and this is a recurring element throughout the books. Greg tries to break this chain-reaction by telling his Great-Uncle to sell a present that Greg did not like, but is unsuccessful into making this happen, as Greg's mother came in and said it was a good idea.

Relationship With Girls

Natasha

Natasha was a girl that Greg liked - but after Natasha rejected Greg's love note and sent him an ordinary card instead, Greg lost interest in her.

Holly Hills

Holly Hills is a girl that Greg likes in the third book. Holly, however, approved Rowley's silliness better than Greg's flirting, and Greg attempts to break up Rowley and Holly by writing a note that said "I only think of you as a friend" and signing it "Slick," which is Rowley's pen name. What has this note caused to Holly remains unknown. However, Greg looses interest in Holly after she confuses him for Fregley.

Heather Hills

Heather Hills' is Holly Hill's sister of which Greg had a crush on. In the second book, it shows that Heather was the babysitter of Rowley for a brief time before they switched to Leland. In the fourth book, Greg attempts to win Heather over by impressing her at the pool. However, when Greg refuses to help Heather clean up vomit, he realizes that Heather would be going to college, and that "long-term relationships never work out."

Trista

Trista is a girl that Greg liked at the end of the Last Straw. However, Trista cheated on both Greg and Rowley and became infatuated with the lifeguard instead. She is set to be a main character in the fifth book.
